Despite being the industry leader for operating systems, Microsoft occasionally releases a new software version that has what can most kindly be called issues. This was the case with Windows Vista, and it has also been the case with Windows 8. Just as they did with Vista, large numbers of users have chosen not to upgrade. Globally, Windows 8 and 8.1 account for a mere 16 percent of the market, while Windows 7 has a 53-percent market share, according to a report released by Netmarketshare.com. This is because Windows 8 failed to address the needs of business, but it added layers of complexity that represented more costs and required longer training periods.

With Windows 10, however, the picture is quite different. Microsoft has added a number of features to make Windows 10 a streamlined, more efficient and more desirable platform for businesses. Following are some of the key enhancements that could well make Windows 10 the operating system that businesses have been needing for years.

  • Universal apps: Apps can be created with the latest runtime in Windows 10 and then deployed company-wide to run on any type of device with the same user interface. Development, support and training costs are reduced, and in many cases, licensing fees are lower as many apps will require only a single license.
  • Reduced footprint: Many previous upgrades of Windows have had increased system requirements over the previous version. Microsoft kept the hardware requirements low for Windows 10, and the new version can run on the same hardware as Windows 7.
  • Security: Two-factor authentication is built in to Windows 10. In addition to requiring users to log in with a password and user ID, companies can add a second factor, such as a one-time PIN or a fingerprint or other biometric data.
  • Easier provisioning: In addition to being easier to deploy the upgrade itself, Microsoft has made it easier to manage devices. New devices can be ready to go in minutes, while existing devices can be managed remotely. Many users will be able to configure their new machines themselves, without having to ask IT for help.

All in all, Windows 10 may well be the most significant operating system for businesses since Windows NT. If you have been waiting to upgrade, Windows 10 may be just what you have been waiting for.
